SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 6, 2025 - Revolutionizing Preventive Dentistry Showcased at IDS 2025
Lumoral, the Finnish-developed light-activated therapy, made a major impact at the International Dental Show (IDS) 2025 in Cologne, Germany. This innovative oral care technology, designed to improve hygiene and reduce chronic infections, was presented to a global audience of dental professionals during the world’s leading dental trade fair.
Advanced Light Therapy Targets Dental Biofilm
Lumoral’s patented system combines antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT, 805 nm) and antibacterial blue light (aBL, 410 nm) to neutralize harmful bacteria. The process is further enhanced by heat and infrared light, creating a powerful yet non-invasive approach to improving oral health. Unlike chemical-based treatments such as chlorhexidine, Lumoral avoids the long-term side effects that limit conventional solutions.
"Pharmaceutical antibacterial agents are effective but unsuitable for long-term use due to their side effects. Lumoral, on the other hand, provides a safe and efficient alternative without these drawbacks," explained Professor Werner Birglechner, a leading German expert in periodontology.
Complementing Mechanical Cleaning at Home
Despite the popularity of advanced electric toothbrushes, plaque removal remains incomplete without additional intervention.
“Mechanical oral hygiene—brushing and flossing—is fundamental, but even the most efficient electric toothbrush removes only about 60% of plaque,” noted Prof. Birglechner. Lumoral enhances everyday oral care by disrupting biofilm structures and reducing bacterial load, ultimately lowering the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Validated by Clinical Research
Lumoral’s efficacy is supported by over 15 clinical studies, including Europe’s largest periodontitis trial conducted at the University of Helsinki with 200 patients. The study confirmed that Lumoral users showed significantly better outcomes than those undergoing standard care alone.
"At three and six months, we observed significantly better outcomes in the Lumoral group, including improved oral hygiene, reduced gum inflammation, and reduction in deep periodontal pockets. The results show the benefit of adjunct Lumoral use when patients receive periodontal treatment. The results were similar in a recently finished multicenter study under peer review."
Additional research is exploring Lumoral’s role in treating conditions such as peri-implantitis, orthodontic complications, mucositis, and systemic diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and Alzheimer’s.
Reducing Antibiotic Use and Supporting Systemic Health
As the global dental field shifts away from overreliance on antibiotics, Lumoral offers a compelling alternative.
“Antibiotics have peaked in periodontal treatment,” said Prof. Birglechner. “Side effects no longer justify their widespread use. We see Lumoral as a viable alternative, offering antibacterial protection without resistance risks.”
Adoption in Germany and Integration into Training
Germany, a leader in antibacterial photodynamic therapy, has embraced Lumoral in both professional and home dental routines. Dental hygiene schools are incorporating Lumoral into their curricula, and insurance companies are developing policies to support its use.
“Would you drive without a seatbelt?” Prof. Birglechner asked. “Think of Lumoral as a seatbelt for your dental work—whether fillings, crowns, implants, or orthodontic corrections. Encourage your patients to use Lumoral at home to protect their oral health and ensure long-term success.”
As the Scientific Director of the praxisDienste Institute and Medical School 11 in Heidelberg, Prof. Birglechner plays a key role in integrating Lumoral into dental training. The institute educates one-third of Germany’s new prophylaxis assistants and half of its dental hygienists, helping to accelerate national adoption.
IDS 2025: A Milestone for Lumoral’s Global Expansion
At IDS 2025, Lumoral was featured in a special press event hosted in collaboration with the German Dental Hygienists Association (VDDH). Attendees had the opportunity to hear directly from experts and witness live demonstrations of the technology in action.
