Seattle – October 30, 2026 -- Millennium Dental Technologies, Inc. said 49% of active U.S. members of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) are now trained in its LANAP protocol, a laser-based alternative to traditional osseous surgery for moderate to severe periodontitis. The company announced the figure at the AAP Annual Meeting in Seattle.
Adoption reaches roughly half of active U.S. periodontists in the AAP
The company, which developed LANAP and manufactures the PerioLase MVP-7 variable-pulsed Nd:YAG dental laser, said both periodontists and general dentists are adopting the protocol. LANAP is available only with the PerioLase MVP-7, which ties each new trained clinician to the company's hardware platform.
Founder, President and Chairman Robert H. Gregg II, DDS, said the milestone matters because "patients have greater access to care they can feel comfortable accepting."
Product and regulatory anniversaries coincide with the announcement
The announcement coincides with the 25th anniversary of the PerioLase MVP-7 and the 10th anniversary of FDA clearance of LANAP for true periodontal regeneration. Millennium cites 651 positive patient outcomes published since 1998. It says the protocol regenerates new cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone on a previously diseased root surface.
Laser treatment avoids scalpels and sutures, cutting bleeding and recovery time
The protocol uses laser energy to target bacteria and diseased tissue while preserving healthy tissue. Treatment requires no scalpels or sutures. According to the company, patients experience less bleeding and faster recovery than with traditional osseous surgery.
Survey of 512 clinicians finds 91.5% rate patient acceptance higher
In an independent survey of 512 LANAP-trained clinicians published in Decisions in Dentistry, 91.5% of respondents rated patient treatment acceptance more positively with LANAP than with traditional periodontal treatment modalities.
Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry trains every clinician on live patients
Every LANAP-trained clinician completes the curriculum at the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD), which combines didactic instruction with supervised treatment of live patients. Dawn M. Gregg, DDS, IALD Training Director and Millennium's Vice President of Operations, attributed the company's adoption among AAP members partly to this training model. The IALD is a nonprofit organization established in 1999.
