Global – October 31, 2026 -- Sixty-five percent of strategic and AI-driven customer success teams report net revenue retention (NRR) of 100% or higher, versus 39% of the least mature AI teams, according to ChurnZero's 2026 Customer Success Leadership Study.
SaaS NRR stays flat from 2024 through 2026
ChurnZero polled nearly 600 customer success (CS) and revenue leaders. Reported NRR has not moved across the three-year period, while the 26-point gap between the most and least mature AI teams on the 100% threshold stands out.
ChurnZero notes that other factors may contribute to the gap, including stronger data, advanced products and services, or better-funded CS teams with more resources.
63% of CS leaders lack a consistent method to track AI impact
Most CS teams use AI but cannot measure its performance. Teams that do not measure AI are four times more likely to require human approval for every recommendation, according to the study.
ChurnZero outlines four steps to move beyond tactical AI
First, redirect time saved on presentations, template-based emails and meeting-note summaries toward customer check-ins, account reviews for buying opportunities and larger books of business.
Second, train customer success managers (CSMs) for strategic work: negotiating expansions, saving at-risk accounts and escalating issues. This requires contextual understanding of customer pain points and the sales skills to promote renewals and expansions at the right time.
Third, deploy signal detection AI agents, which many customer success platforms now offer, to evaluate customer data. These agents flag accounts at risk of loss and identify expansion opportunities, so CSMs can concentrate on saving and growing accounts.
Fourth, measure results. ChurnZero recommends listing each AI-automated task, defining a success metric, recording pre-automation performance and tracking the metric regularly. That framework can then be applied to other AI workflows to decide where more investment makes sense.
