Alfa Laval to Supply Heat Exchangers for Stockholm BECCS Project

Lund, Sweden – September 16, 2026 -- Alfa Laval has been selected by Saipem, the EPC contractor for Stockholm Exergi's BECCS project, to supply heat transfer equipment for a facility expected to capture, liquify, and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Facility to represent one to two percent of global carbon capture capacity

The plant, set to begin operations in 2028, will be built at Stockholm Exergi's biomass-based combined heat and power site in Stockholm, described as Europe's largest such plant. Once operational, it aims to be one of the world's largest facilities for capturing and permanently storing biogenic CO2.

Alfa Laval to supply Ziepack gas-gas interchangers and plate-and-frame exchangers

Alfa Laval's equipment package, selected by Saipem under its EPC contract, includes the Ziepack gas-gas interchanger alongside multiple process plate-and-frame heat exchangers. These components are designated as integral parts of the core carbon capture process, tasked with maximizing system efficiency and heat recovery.

Recovered energy to feed back into Stockholm's district heating network

Egil Nybakk, Director BECCS at Stockholm Exergi, said the plant will require substantial energy to capture CO2 from flue gas and liquify it, but the Ziepack heat exchangers will allow the company to reclaim that energy and return it to its existing district heating system, contributing to its carbon removal targets.

Project ties to Sweden's climate neutrality goals and EU strategy

Thomas Møller, President of the Energy Division at Alfa Laval, said carbon capture at this scale is among the most demanding thermal engineering challenges in the energy transition, and that effective energy recovery is what makes it commercially viable. The BECCS Stockholm initiative forms part of Sweden's climate neutrality goals and contributes to the EU's broader climate strategy.
