BlackBird Financial Takes Large Fiserv Stake, Backs CEO Lyons

United States – October 31, 2026 -- Judah Spinner's BlackBird Financial has built a significant ownership position in Fiserv, Inc., a company that generated more than $5 billion in adjusted net income over the past twelve months and carries a market capitalization of around $33 billion.

BlackBird is a hedge fund modeled on the Buffett Partnership of the 1950s. The announcement did not state the size of the stake. Spinner said the fund looked past Fiserv's short-term difficulties and focused on its long-term position.

BlackBird rules out activism and backs CEO Mike Lyons

Spinner said BlackBird will not pursue an activist role and fully supports management. "Our intention is to be long-term partners," he said.

He expects the next couple of years to be hard for Fiserv under new CEO Mike Lyons. Spinner said Lyons's decisions today will build a stronger, more resilient business over the next decade.

Switching costs anchor the thesis in core processing and merchant acquiring

In core processing, Fiserv is among the largest providers to U.S. banks and credit unions. Together with FIS and Jack Henry, it supports the majority of the market. Institutions seldom change vendors because replacing a core ledger and its interconnected systems is extensive and risky.

In merchant acquiring, Fiserv is one of the largest processors globally. Its rivals include FIS/Worldpay, Global Payments, Chase, Stripe and Adyen. Clover, which many acquirers and software partners now distribute, reinforces its position. Once a merchant's point-of-sale and settlement workflows run on Fiserv's rails, switching providers is not simple.

STAR, Accel and Zelle integrations sit inside bank platforms

Fiserv also plays a role in PIN-debit routing and bank connectivity through STAR, Accel and its Zelle integrations. These capabilities are embedded directly in mobile and online banking platforms, which makes them hard to unwind or replace.

Spinner concedes software-led competition but expects higher earnings

Spinner acknowledged tough competitors, especially software-led entrants in niche verticals. He said most of Fiserv's business remains extremely sticky and that the company can hold its ground.

He expects Fiserv to earn more in five and ten years than it does today. At a $33 billion market cap, Spinner said BlackBird believes it is getting a lot for its money.
