Berlin – September 11, 2026 -- The Brandenburg-Berlin Business Association (UVBB) warned that the Alternative for Germany's (AfD) election gains in Saxony-Anhalt threaten the foundations of the German economy, citing the party's push to exit the European Union and the euro.
AfD's EU and euro exit platform threatens Mittelstand, association president says
UVBB President Burkhardt Greiff told rbb24 Inforadio on Tuesday that the AfD has a "clear program" targeting the pillars of German economic strength: a robust industrial base and the social market economy. He said the party's plan to restrict the free movement of workers would directly undermine both pillars.
Greiff fears entire industry sectors could collapse under AfD policies
Greiff said whole industries could disappear if AfD policies take hold, with small and medium-sized enterprises facing the greatest risk. He warned that companies would relocate to neighboring countries or abroad to rebuild operations, shifting jobs and investment out of Germany.
Business leaders convene in Potsdam to assess election fallout
The warning comes as the 8th East German Entrepreneurs' Day convenes in Potsdam, bringing together business executives, policymakers, scientists, association representatives and public administration officials to discuss the Saxony-Anhalt election result and its economic implications.
