CAD-1005 holds FDA and EMA designations in heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
Cadrenal describes itself as a late-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on critical care cardiology and orphan cardiovascular conditions. Its pipeline includes CAD-1005, tecarfarin and frunexian.
CAD-1005 is an investigational therapy in development for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) and Cardiac Surgery-Associated Acute Kidney Injury (CSA-AKI). It is designed to selectively inhibit 12-lipoxygenase (12-LOX), an enzyme central to platelet immune activation and thrombo-inflammatory signaling in HIT. The company intends it for use alongside existing standards of care.
CAD-1005 carries three regulatory designations:
- FDA Orphan Drug Designation for prophylaxis of thrombosis in HIT patients
- FDA Fast Track designation for treatment and prevention of HIT
- European Medicines Agency orphan designation for treatment of platelet-activating factor 4 disorders
Second-generation oral 12-LOX therapeutics, grouped under CAD-2000, are in development for chronic indications.
Cadrenal asks FDA for rare pediatric designation for tecarfarin in Kawasaki disease
Tecarfarin is a late-stage oral vitamin K antagonist intended to prevent heart attacks, strokes and deaths from blood clots in patients needing chronic anticoagulation. Target groups include patients with end-stage kidney disease and atrial fibrillation, those with left ventricular assist devices, and potentially those with Kawasaki disease.
The company recently asked the FDA for Rare Pediatric Disease Designation for tecarfarin. The proposed indication is prevention of life-threatening blood clots inside coronary artery aneurysms in children with Kawasaki disease. Tecarfarin already holds FDA Orphan Drug and Fast Track designations.
