Day of Architecture 2025 Showcases Sustainable and Inclusive Building Across North Rhine-Westphalia

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – May 13, 2025 – The Architektenkammer Nordrhein-Westfalen (Chamber of Architects NRW) will once again open the doors to 156 innovative and renewed architectural projects across 80 cities and municipalities during the 30th annual “Tag der Architektur” (Day of Architecture), taking place on June 28–29, 2025. This statewide event underscores the dynamic evolution of building design in North Rhine-Westphalia, with a sharp focus on sustainability, urban regeneration, and socially responsive construction.

Exploring the Diversity of Modern Architecture

Held under the theme “Vielfalt bauen!” (“Building Diversity”), the event offers professionals and the public the opportunity to explore a wide variety of projects — from tiny houses and educational buildings to large-scale commercial developments and intergenerational housing models. This year’s selection reflects the expanding role of architecture in addressing environmental and social imperatives.

“Viele der Objekte, die unsere Mitglieder präsentieren, spiegeln sowohl den Wandel im Planen und Bauen als auch gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen, für die unser Berufsstand konkrete Lösungen entwickelt,” stated Ernst Uhing, President of the Architektenkammer Nordrhein-Westfalen. He noted that the focus of many projects has shifted away from new builds to climate-friendly redevelopment of existing structures. He continued, “Architektur hat immer auch einen gesellschaftlichen Auftrag.”

Reflecting Societal and Industry Trends

The 2025 Day of Architecture provides a cross-section of current priorities in architecture and urban planning, including:

  • Climate protection through energy-efficient retrofits and circular building principles
  • Adaptive reuse of the built environment
  • Barrier-free living and inclusive community housing
  • Urban densification and neighborhood revitalization
  • Educational, cultural, and civic infrastructure
  • Garden and landscape design as a vehicle for social well-being

Featured projects include the new Tafel building in Duisburg by Druschke Architektur and a short-term housing solution for children with support needs in Bochum by Kemper Steiner & Partner Architekten. On the commercial side, standout office developments such as “Materna – Am Phoenixpark” in Dortmund by Gerber Architekten and the “X Dock Büro am Mittelhafen” in Münster by Kleihues + Kleihues offer insights into progressive workplace design.

Inspiring Dialogue Between Architects and the Public

Celebrated for three decades, the Day of Architecture has become a cornerstone for architectural discourse in NRW and beyond. Thousands of architecture enthusiasts and stakeholders use the event to gain insights into design trends, building technologies, and the creative processes behind contemporary architecture.

Eagerly visited each year, private homes also feature prominently. Examples in 2025 include a villa-style new build in Ennigerloh by thomas Becker_architekten and a renovated 1980s house in Rhede with an atrium extension by architekturbüro holger ebbert. These and other projects continue to make the event a key inspiration source for builders and planners.
