Essential Oils Market to Hit $29.52B by 2031 as Pharma Demand Grows

HYDERABAD – October 29, 2026 -- The global essential oils market will grow from $20.08 billion in 2026 to $29.52 billion by 2031, a CAGR of 8.10%, according to Mordor Intelligence. Wider use of aromatherapy and pharmaceutical interest in the oils' potential antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and respiratory properties are driving the expansion.

Aromatherapy moves from spas into hospitals and workplaces

Growing awareness of mental health is taking aromatherapy beyond traditional spa settings into hospitals and workplaces. This opens additional wellness applications for essential oil suppliers. Product consistency, reliable sourcing and suitability for specific uses remain key purchasing considerations as use cases diversify.

Pharmaceutical companies explore essential oils for three therapeutic properties

The pharmaceutical industry is assessing essential oils for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and respiratory uses. Suppliers serving pharmaceutical and healthcare customers face a premium on consistent ingredient quality and precise product specifications.

Asia-Pacific production growth reaches a 10.25% CAGR as Europe holds value lead

Asia-Pacific is growing at a 10.25% CAGR through 2031 in essential oil production and consumption. India and China are increasing output of mint, lemongrass and citrus oils used widely in personal care products. Europe remains the largest market by value, and Mordor projects it will expand from $3.74 billion in 2026 to $5.60 billion by 2031, an 8.41% CAGR.

Mordor says climate-induced harvest volatility in southern France is raising Europe's reliance on imported raw botanicals. Multinational flavor and fragrance houses are scaling supercritical CO2 extraction and internal toxicological screening to manage rising testing costs under REACH and the EU 2023/1545 allergen-disclosure directives.

Mint oil segment forecast to grow at 10.72% CAGR to $2.03 billion

The global mint essential oils market is estimated at $1.22 billion in 2026 and is forecast to reach $2.03 billion by 2031. Pharmaceutical, confectionery and oral-care formulators are shifting from synthetic aroma chemicals to botanical feedstocks with verifiable origin records. Production is concentrated in India and the United States, and suppliers with long-term grower contracts and auditable distillation practices are commanding pricing premiums over volatile spot-market transactions.

Moderately fragmented market rewards quality control and sourcing depth

The market is segmented by product type, source, nature, application and geography. Orange and lemon oils lead the product-type breakdown, and food and beverage and pharmaceuticals lead the application split.

"Maintaining consistent quality while aligning product portfolios with application-specific requirements will be critical to competing in this moderately fragmented market," said Bhavesh-Narasinha Varute, Senior Research Manager at Mordor Intelligence.

Key companies named in the report are International Flavors & Fragrances Inc., Givaudan SA, doTERRA International LLC, Young Living Essential Oils, LC and Symrise AG.
