German Inflation Hits 2.9% in August as Fuel Prices Surge 27.7%

Wiesbaden – September 15, 2026 -- Germany's annual inflation rate climbed to 2.9% in August 2026, up from 2.8% in July and 2.3% in June, driven largely by an energy price shock tied to the Iran war, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) confirmed. Consumer prices rose 0.2% month-on-month, matching the preliminary reading.

Energy prices post the sharpest annual jump in over three years

Overall energy costs rose 10.5% year-on-year in August, up from 8.3% in July, marking the steepest increase since February 2023's 19.1% spike. Fuel prices led the surge, up 27.7% year-on-year and 3.1% month-on-month, with diesel climbing 6.4% and premium gasoline 2.1% versus July. Light heating oil rose 49.6% annually and 6.5% on the month.

Destatis President Ruth Brand attributed the acceleration directly to oil-market disruption linked to the conflict in Iran, which has pushed pump prices higher despite the June 30 expiration of Germany's fuel discount program.

Electricity and gas prices fall as government measures take hold

Not all energy categories rose: electricity prices dropped 5.5% year-on-year, natural gas including operating costs fell 2.9%, and district heating declined 1.0%, partly reflecting federal relief measures in place since the start of 2026. As a result, total household energy costs were 0.7% lower than a year earlier.

Food inflation stays flat while eggs and vegetables jump

Food prices rose just 0.1% year-on-year, down from 0.4% in each of the prior three months. Eggs rose 15.2%, fresh vegetables 5.2%, and fish and seafood 4.4%. Offsetting these gains, edible fats and oils fell 15.3% (butter down 29.9%), fresh fruit dropped 5.6%, and dairy products fell 5.5%. Month-on-month, food prices edged down 0.1%, with fresh fruit falling 1.6% on seasonal effects.

Core inflation holds below headline rate at 2.4%

Stripping out food and energy, core inflation stood at 2.4% in August, below the 2.9% headline figure. Excluding energy alone, the rate was 2.2%; excluding heating oil and fuel, 2.0%.

Goods prices outpace services as electronics and tobacco climb

Goods prices rose 3.0% year-on-year, with consumer goods up 4.2% on the back of energy costs and durable goods up 1.0%. Information processing equipment jumped 9.0% and tobacco products 6.0%, while household appliances fell 1.9% and consumer electronics declined 2.8%.

Services inflation eased slightly to 2.8% year-on-year. Social institution services rose 6.3%, vehicle maintenance and repair 4.7%, and package holidays 3.2%. Water supply and dwelling-related services, along with restaurant services, each rose 3.1%. Net cold rents increased 1.9%, while telecommunications services were nearly flat at 0.1%.

Monthly swings show toys, clothing up as flight tickets drop 8.0%

Compared with July, games, toys and hobby goods rose 3.0% and clothing 1.8%, while flight tickets fell 8.0% month-on-month.
