Washington – September 17, 2026 -- The Center for Green Market Activation (GMA), RMI, and 3Degrees have launched the Green Ammonia Buyers Alliance (GABA), a collective procurement initiative targeting emissions from fertilizer manufacturing, one of the largest contributors to the sector's estimated 1.2 gigatons of annual CO2e output.
GABA will pool demand from food and beverage companies to purchase Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) directly from verified green ammonia producers through a book-and-claim system, aiming to give project developers the revenue certainty needed to move green ammonia facilities from announcement to construction.
Fertilizer emissions gap separates producers from corporate buyers
Green ammonia, made with renewable electricity and water instead of natural gas, can eliminate nearly all emissions tied to ammonia production. Yet food and beverage companies with Scope 3 targets sit five to six steps downstream from ammonia producers, leaving dozens of announced green ammonia projects short of the bankable demand required to proceed.

GABA's founding members include leading food and beverage companies, though specific names were not disclosed. Kim Carnahan, GMA CEO, said no single company can scale a market like green ammonia alone, and that GABA creates the demand signal needed to move projects into implementation.
Program mirrors book-and-claim models used in aviation fuel and shipping
Thomas Koch Blank, Managing Director at RMI, said green ammonia is one of the most important long-term pathways for cutting fertilizer emissions but requires clear market signals to bring new production online. GABA's structure follows market-based systems already used to channel investment into renewable electricity, sustainable aviation fuel, decarbonized shipping, zero-emission heavy-duty trucking, and low-carbon construction materials.
Alliance builds on existing 3Degrees-led fertilizer decarbonization network
GABA extends work from the Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliance (LCFA), a 3Degrees-led initiative comprising 25 food and beverage companies focused on retrofitting existing fertilizer plants through blue ammonia and nitric acid decarbonization. 3Degrees CEO Philippe Vedrenne said GABA directly complements LCFA by creating a dedicated platform for collective support of new green ammonia production.
First pilot procurement scheduled for fourth quarter of 2026
GABA plans to launch its first pilot procurement in Q4 2026. Companies joining the inaugural procurement will have the opportunity to shape program design and secure first-mover discounts through 2027.
