SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Dec. 24, 2024 – The GSMA recently concluded its Year End Gala in Beijing, an event that highlighted China's pioneering use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across various sectors. The Gala brought together over 150 attendees from over 100 organizations, including prominent figures from China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, and leading technology and media companies.

Themed "Breaking Boundaries to Ignite Innovation and Drive Change," the event featured insightful keynotes and panel discussions focusing on the transformative impact of AI on the mobile ecosystem. Key topics explored included:

  • AI's Transformative Potential: How AI is revolutionizing the telecoms industry and other sectors.

Sihan Bo Chen, GSMA's Head of Greater China, emphasized China's leadership in leveraging 5G, cloud computing, and AI to drive innovation and diversify services. "The mobile industry in China is leading the charge in leveraging 5G, cloud and compute to explore new business models and drive positive change across vertical sectors, diversifying their services beyond core connectivity," said Chen. He further highlighted the growing contribution of Chinese stakeholders to global development through advancements in AI and electric vehicles.

GSMA Report Showcases Operator Best Practices in AI

A key highlight of the Gala was the release of the GSMA report "Operator Best Practices: AI Large Model-Empowering Verticals Use Cases." This report provides valuable insights into how operators are effectively utilizing AI across various sectors, including government, customer service, industrial applications, healthcare, education, and urban governance.

The report features compelling case studies demonstrating the practical applications of AI, such as:

  • "Four Predictions" Flood Control System in Ningxia: China Mobile's collaboration with the water conservation industry to develop an AI-powered flood control system. This system enhances prediction, pre-warning, pre-rehearsal, and pre-planning capabilities, contributing to sustainable water resource utilization and disaster prevention.
  • Multimodal Sichuanese Dialect Protection: China Telecom's development of a multimodal AI database for the Sichuanese dialect. This initiative enables dialect speech recognition and synthesis, promoting cultural preservation and facilitating communication across language barriers.
  • Yuanjing Urban Governance Large Model Reshaping Urban Governance: China Unicom's utilization of the Yuanjing-Urban Governance Model to address urban challenges like traffic congestion and pollution. This model provides comprehensive data analysis and predictions to aid in informed decision-making for urban planning and governance.

The Year End Gala marks the conclusion of the GSMA's event calendar for 2024. The focus now shifts to MWC25 Barcelona, scheduled for March 3-6, 2025. With the theme "Converge. Connect.
