Madison Energy Launches $2B Push for 1 GW Distributed Power by 2028

New York – September 19, 2026 -- Madison Energy Infrastructure has launched a Community Infrastructure initiative to mobilize up to $2 billion in capital, targeting an additional 1 gigawatt of distributed energy capacity by 2028 as AI-driven power demand strains the U.S. grid.

Madison plans to double its energy footprint within two years

The company's operating portfolio is expected to surpass 1 GW later this fall, and the new initiative aims to add another gigawatt by 2028, effectively doubling Madison's infrastructure footprint. The buildout will draw on Madison's utility relationships, national project pipeline, and its network of regional developers through AccelDev.

Data center growth is outpacing grid capacity, forcing local energy solutions

Richard Walsh, Chief Executive Officer of Madison Energy Infrastructure, said AI requires power at unprecedented speed and scale, and that building that infrastructure demands more than raw capacity. Walsh said the initiative aims to help AI labs and hyperscalers engage directly with the communities hosting their infrastructure.

Madison has already deployed more than 600 projects across 30-plus states

The company's existing ecosystem combines institutional capital with local development, community engagement, and utility partnerships. Active projects include 50 MW of standalone energy storage with CORE Electric Cooperative in Colorado, a 13 MW solar plus 8.75 MW storage project with the City of Niles in Michigan, a 16 MW solar project under construction at Denver International Airport, and a 27 MW offsite solar project nearing completion in Pennsylvania for a national industrial client operating in PJM territory.

Chris Hildred, Chief Energy Supply Officer at CORE Electric Cooperative, said partnering with Madison will allow the utility to deploy distributed energy storage at scale, supporting reliability during periods of high demand.

EQT-backed data center developer EdgeConneX expands its clean energy tie-up

Madison's ongoing partnership with EdgeConneX pairs clean energy supply with the data center developer's digital infrastructure builds. Andrew Brodeur, Vice President at EdgeConneX, said the AI infrastructure buildout offers an opportunity to deliver local benefits alongside clean energy.

EQT frames power availability as the primary constraint on AI infrastructure growth

Alex Darden, Head of EQT Infrastructure, Americas, said power availability is increasingly the gating factor for how fast AI infrastructure can scale, adding further strain to local grids. Darden said EQT's position backing both digital and energy infrastructure companies, including EdgeConneX and Madison, gives it a distinct vantage point on aligning local energy needs with AI infrastructure growth.
