Pittsburgh – September 14, 2026 -- MSA Safety has launched the A1X, a next-generation WinGrip vacuum anchor that weighs 7 kg, 35% lighter than its predecessor, and cuts the base diameter to 350 mm from 480 mm to speed up aircraft maintenance operations.
Redesigned pneumatic system doubles anchor repositioning per cylinder
The A1X uses rechargeable air or gas cylinders to generate suction force, creating a non-invasive anchor point on wing surfaces without damaging the aircraft. MSA redesigned the pneumatic system to double the number of anchor repositions available from a single cylinder, reducing the need for technicians to carry spare cylinders during time-sensitive line maintenance.
Smaller diameter extends compatibility to business jets and private aircraft
The reduced pad diameter allows the A1X to be used on smaller aircraft previously incompatible with WinGrip technology, including business jets, private aircraft and commercial airliners. The device is certified by all major aircraft manufacturers, including Airbus and Boeing, for use in routine maintenance procedures.
Zero electronic components allow use during refueling operations
Because the A1X contains no electrical components, MSA states it carries no ignition risk and can be used safely in environments where fuel vapors may be present, including during refueling. A built-in audible alarm system provides real-time status updates, and the unit maintains its seal even if airflow is interrupted. With an integrated air reservoir, the anchor requires no external air supply or fixed infrastructure, allowing use in maintenance hangars, on the tarmac, or at remote sites across varying altitudes and temperatures.
Single technician can deploy A1X for A and B checks without additional crew
MSA designed the A1X specifically for line maintenance and standardized A and B check operations, where speed and flexibility are priorities. Its portability allows one technician to deploy and reposition either of two anchor points independently, without aerial lifeline infrastructure or additional personnel. For larger C and D inspection operations requiring multiple technicians on the wing simultaneously, MSA's full-lifeline WinGrip systems remain available.
José Sanchez, MSA Safety senior vice president and president of EMEA operations, said the A1X was developed from feedback of daily WinGrip users and aims to remove barriers preventing technicians from deploying fall-protection equipment in the field. Each A1X kit ships with two anchor points -- a primary vacuum anchor unit and a "floating" anchor for triangulated configurations -- along with a dedicated pneumatic jack, pressure line and personal protective equipment set. Kits can be customized to specific client requirements.
