MSA Safety Launches Lighter A1X WinGrip Vacuum Anchor for Aircraft MRO

Pittsburgh – September 13, 2026 -- MSA Safety has launched the A1X, a vacuum anchor weighing 7 kg, 35% lighter than its predecessor, designed to speed up fall-protection deployment during aircraft maintenance checks.

Smaller footprint opens access to more aircraft types

The A1X reduces its pad diameter to 350 mm from 480 mm, allowing use on executive jets, private aircraft and smaller commercial planes previously outside the range of MSA's WinGrip technology. The system is approved by Airbus and Boeing, giving maintenance teams clearance to adopt it into standard procedures.

Redesigned pneumatics cut cylinder swaps in half

MSA re-engineered the anchor's pneumatic system to double the number of repositioning cycles achievable from a single cylinder, reducing the need for technicians to carry spare cylinders during time-constrained line maintenance. The A1X uses vacuum suction from rechargeable air or gas cylinders to create a non-invasive anchor point on wing surfaces, avoiding damage to the aircraft structure.

Electronics-free design targets fueling-zone safety

Because the A1X contains no electrical components, MSA states it carries no ignition risk, making it usable in environments where fuel vapors may be present, including during refueling operations. An integrated sound-based alarm system provides real-time status information, and the unit retains its seal if airflow is interrupted. The anchor operates independently within its dedicated pneumatic cylinder, requiring no external air supply or fixed infrastructure, and is built to function across a range of environmental conditions from high-altitude sites to hot and cold climates.

Product is built specifically for A and B checks

MSA designed the A1X for line maintenance and standardized A and B check operations, where a single technician can deploy and reposition one of two anchor points independently without additional lifeline infrastructure or personnel. For larger C and D check operations requiring multiple workers on the wing simultaneously, MSA's full lifeline WinGrip systems remain available. Each A1X kit includes a primary anchor unit, a secondary anchor for triangulated configurations, a pneumatic cylinder, a pressure line and personal protective equipment, and can be customized to specific client needs.

MSA executive frames launch around technician adoption

"The result is the most capable and portable WinGrip anchor we have ever manufactured, compatible with a wider range of aircraft than any previous generation," said José Sánchez, senior vice president of MSA Safety and president of EMEA Business.

Product debuts at MRO Europe in October

MSA will showcase the A1X vacuum anchor at MRO Europe in October 2026, where company representatives will offer product demonstrations and briefing sessions.
