Camden – October 29, 2026 -- New Jersey American Water graduated 10 participants from the 2026 Water UP! cohort, bringing the total to 61 graduates since the workforce development program launched in 2021. Ten-week curriculum combines classroom work with field training
Participants spend 10 weeks in classroom instruction, professional development, field experiences and hands-on training. The curriculum covers financial literacy, customer service, leadership development, OSHA training and utility operations.
Graduate Mia Morales, a Hopeworks alumna, said the program taught her to change water meters and repair water main breaks, and gave her practice in networking, resume writing and delivering an elevator pitch.
Hopeworks returns as recruitment partner for the 2026 cohort
Camden-based Hopeworks, which helps young adults build skills and prepare for long-term careers, partnered with the utility on the inaugural 2021 class. It returned in the program's fifth year to support participant recruitment and workforce readiness. Dan Rhoton, Hopeworks' chief executive, said Water UP! exposes young adults to industries they might not otherwise consider.
Camden residents feature in the class as the program returns to the city
Several 2026 graduates are Camden residents. Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen said partners are working together "for our young people and young adults."
Mark McDonough, president of New Jersey American Water, framed the program as preparation for the next generation of utility professionals. The 2026 graduates received certificates for completing the program.
