Novelis Rolls First Coil at $5B Alabama Aluminum Plant

Bay Minette, Alabama – October 07, 2026 -- Novelis Inc. has produced the first coil on the cold mill at its $5 billion aluminum recycling and rolling plant in Bay Minette, Alabama, advancing the facility toward commercial shipments set for the second quarter of 2027.

Novelis commissions first fully integrated U.S. aluminum plant built in 40 years

The Bay Minette facility marks the first new fully integrated aluminum recycling and rolling plant constructed in the United States in more than four decades. All assets required for commercial shipments are now in the commissioning process, with customer qualification underway.

Plant will add 600 kilotonnes of annual rolled aluminum capacity

Once fully operational, the facility will supply beverage packaging, automotive and specialty product markets with 600 kilotonnes of rolled aluminum capacity per year. An integrated recycling center at the site will be capable of processing more than 15 billion used beverage cans annually.

Investment targets capacity-constrained North American aluminum market

Steve Fisher, president and CEO of Novelis, said the cold mill milestone is a key step in commissioning Bay Minette and expanding the domestic supply of rolled aluminum. He added that the investment is designed to meet long-term market demand, strengthen the company's U.S. manufacturing footprint and increase the use of recycled content in its products.

Facility expected to create up to 1,000 jobs once fully operational

Novelis projects the Bay Minette plant will generate up to 1,000 new jobs at full operation. The company reported net sales of $18.4 billion in fiscal year 2026 and operates as a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited, part of the Aditya Birla Group.
