Oracle AI Database Migration Turns Into an Architecture Decision

Global – October 27, 2026 -- Oracle AI Database can now run across five environments: OCI, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and supported on-premises setups. It can also run on Oracle-managed infrastructure inside the customer data center. Migration is therefore an architecture decision before it is a data-movement exercise, according to guidance from Oracle services provider AppsTek.

Four pressures converge on the database layer

Enterprises have long moved applications, identity, analytics, and integration platforms to the cloud while leaving Oracle databases on-premises. Oracle multicloud services allow Oracle database services to run inside major hyperscaler environments, subject to the selected service and version. AppsTek lists four converging pressures: cloud strategies reaching the final infrastructure tier, rising security and resilience requirements, the cost of owning infrastructure, and AI and analytics programs that need easier access to operational data.

Four architecture questions come before tool selection

The first question is where the database should run. Workloads constrained by residency, sovereignty, or latency may stay on-premises or use Exadata Cloud@Customer. The second is the region, which depends on application latency, user location, data residency, availability design, and service availability.

The third question is the service model. Exadata Database Service suits workloads that need Exadata performance with greater administrative control. Autonomous AI Database shifts more routine operations to Oracle, and Base Database Service covers workloads that do not need Exadata-class infrastructure. The fourth is what moves first, with nonproduction or disaster recovery environments a practical first wave for proving cutover and rollback.

Plan, prepare, execute, validate form one connected sequence

AppsTek says the target architecture determines the migration method, which shapes the downtime model and in turn the cutover and rollback rehearsals. Treating the phases as separate workstreams creates gaps where migrations usually fail. Validation covers application connectivity, performance, backup, monitoring, encryption, high availability, and disaster recovery.

Oracle Zero Downtime Migration (ZDM) gives teams direct control over the migration host, method, cutover, and rollback. OCI Database Migration (DMS) offers a managed workflow, and is particularly relevant when the target is Autonomous AI Database.
