Path2Response CRO: Legacy Data Sourcing Is Capping Acquisition Growth

Global – October 29, 2026 -- Differentiated audience sourcing has indexed 10% to nearly 50% higher in response than legacy list mixes across direct mail acquisition campaigns, according to Chris McDonald, President and CRO of Path2Response.

Cost-focused sourcing models treat data as interchangeable

McDonald argues that the older playbook of cutting list cost, narrowing the number of sources and using overlap as validation worked when providers differed mainly by scale. Providers now differ in signals, recency, refresh cadence, modeling agility and processing sophistication, he says. Circulation plans that favor tenure and overlap keep resurfacing the same names across providers, and performance converges.

Refresh speed separates providers

Some providers update data daily, others monthly. Some can model and back-test the same day, while others run rigid batch cycles. Some combine high-recency intent signals with verified transaction data. Daily refresh lets marketers reach high-intent prospects earlier in the decision cycle, McDonald says, and modeling that adapts as signals change improves audience quality.

Incremental ROAS replaces cost per name as the yardstick

McDonald says traditional models over-optimize the denominator of the ROI equation, meaning list cost and CPM. He points to the numerator instead: new customers, incremental revenue, sales or donations. The metric he proposes is incremental ROAS driven by new-customer growth and dollars generated. Lift shows up in response, average order value or gift amount, and downstream touches, especially second and third contacts.

Campaign results show response lifts of up to 7x

Direct mail acquisition campaigns in fine jewelry, specialty food and humanitarian fundraising indexed 10% to nearly 50% higher in response than legacy mixes. One humanitarian campaign posted a 16% response increase, a 379% rise in average gift and a 3x return on the campaign.

In direct mail retargeting across home furnishings, apparel, footwear, home décor and subscription food, precision-driven audience selection delivered 2x to 7x lifts in response rates, along with gains in revenue per piece. Incremental ROAS reached strong double-digit multiples in multiple campaigns, McDonald says.

He urges marketers to review sourcing frameworks with agency partners and to bring richer, more differentiated data sources into acquisition plans.
