Toronto – October 29, 2026 -- Rodan Energy Solutions Inc. will develop, own and operate a 50 megawatt-hour (MWh) behind-the-meter battery energy storage system (BESS) at St. Marys Cement's Bowmanville, Ontario plant, which will be Canada's largest installation of its kind to date. The long-term agreement with St. Marys Cement Inc. (Canada), a subsidiary of Votorantim Cimentos North America (VCNA), requires no upfront capital from the cement producer.

Rodan carries development capital and operational risk under the Bowmanville deal

Rodan assumes the development capital and the operational risk. St. Marys Cement receives a fully managed energy solution over the life of the asset. Rodan will run the system through its proprietary FlexOps platform, targeting grid flexibility resources and energy cost savings.

Paul Grod, President and CEO of Rodan, said the company's performance is tied directly to client outcomes because Rodan owns and operates the asset.

Battery shifts Bowmanville's grid draw away from peak-demand periods

The system lets the plant cut its grid demand during peak electricity use while keeping essential operations running. The batteries charge in lower-demand periods and discharge at peak. According to the source, this reduces demand on the grid when electricity carbon intensity can be higher.

The plant has operated in Bowmanville since 1968. The project supports VCNA's commitment to net-zero concrete by 2050 and its interim 2030 targets.

VCNA treats its first storage project as a template for other sites

Bowmanville is VCNA's first project of this type. The company says it creates a foundation for evaluating similar opportunities across its other operations. VCNA is headquartered in Toronto and has more than 130 locations across North America. Jorge Wagner, President and CEO of VCNA, said the project combines energy cost management, operational resilience and the company's sustainability roadmap.

FlexOps manages more than 1,500 MW as Rodan expands its storage portfolio

FlexOps currently manages over 1,500 MW of distributed energy resources across North America. These include curtailable load, generation, and grid-connected and behind-the-meter battery storage.

Rodan is building a North American behind-the-meter BESS portfolio and is seeking commercial and industrial energy users, battery manufacturers, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms, investors and financial institutions as partners. The company says it is in active discussions with hyperscalers, large-footprint data centre operators, industrial and commercial consumers, electric vehicle fleets and utilities.
