Södertälje, Sweden – September 17, 2026 -- Scania has engineered an electric long-haul truck configuration capable of up to 720 kilometres of range, combining expanded battery capacity with megawatt charging system (MCS) support to tackle one of freight electrification's toughest segments.
Battery packs behind the cab add 356 kWh of capacity
In a typical configuration, two MP20 battery packs mounted behind the cab add approximately 356 kWh of installed capacity, supplementing existing chassis- and under-cab-mounted batteries. This layout lets operators scale energy storage without solely depending on chassis-mounted batteries, giving fleets more flexibility to balance range against payload on demanding routes.
New aerodynamic front cuts energy use by up to 3 percent
Paired with Scania's protruding IVD (Increased Vehicle Dimension) front, the battery-behind-cab design reduces energy consumption by up to 3 percent depending on specification and operation. Wind resistance accounts for a disproportionately large share of total energy draw in electric trucks, making aerodynamic gains directly relevant to range and total cost of operation.
Configuration supports 6x2*4 tractors exceeding 16.5 metres
The setup enables selected long-haul 6x2*4 tractor configurations to run with standard European trailer combinations, even when total vehicle length exceeds 16.5 metres, while maintaining turning performance. This allows fleet operators to retain existing trailer compatibility rather than redesigning logistics around shorter combinations.
MCS charging targets shorter, more productive stops
The expanded battery architecture is designed to work with MCS charging, aimed at shortening charging stops and improving vehicle productivity across long-distance schedules. Scania frames the combination of range, payload and charging strategy as a single design problem rather than separate constraints.
