CHARLOTTE – – November 05, 2026 -- Securly's AI Transparency tool gave 1,806 districts in 39 states visibility into more than 6.2 million student AI conversations between December 2025 and October 2026, as the K-12 safety vendor widened its controls over Google's AI-generated search content.
Securly's "Restrict AI Mode" setting in Securly Filter, which previously blocked only Google's AI Mode, now also blocks AI Overview. With the setting on, students see standard Google search results without AI-written summaries.
AI Overview closed a gap for districts that had already blocked AI tools
Google shows AI-generated content in two places. AI Mode is a chat-style search experience. AI Overview is a summary that appears automatically at the top of results on the All tab. Because AI Overview appears on ordinary searches, students in schools that block AI tools could still see AI-generated answers.
With Restrict AI Mode enabled, Securly Filter hides and/or redirects students away from both features, depending on filtering method. Images, Videos and News tabs remain available, and SafeSearch settings are unaffected.
Administrators set AI access per policy in the Filter Policy Editor
Districts can switch the setting on or off per policy. A district can keep Google's AI features off for younger students while allowing them for an older class, and can change that decision as its AI guidance develops.
Securly Chief Technology Officer Spence Mallder said districts wanting to restrict AI have had to divert time from serving students to find ways to block the feature, and that districts, not the search engine, should decide when AI appears in front of students.
AI Transparency tracks usage across Gemini, ChatGPT and other ed-tech tools
For AI tools districts choose to allow, Securly AI Transparency shows student AI use across platforms including Gemini, ChatGPT and other ed-tech AI tools. Administrators can view usage by school, grade or classroom, set guardrails on AI conversations, and flag concerning conversations for review.
