Shanghai – September 16, 2026 -- Shanghai Electric has secured its first overseas heavy-duty gas turbine contract, landing the Unit 3 award for the 500 MW Sarawak Samalaju Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Project in Malaysia.
Shanghai Electric will deliver full EPC turnkey scope plus a 25-year service agreement
The contract covers a complete engineering, procurement and construction turnkey solution for the gas-fired plant, paired with a 25-year long-term service agreement (LTSA) spanning all major equipment. Gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, heat recovery steam generators and air-cooled systems will all be manufactured in-house by Shanghai Electric, which will also act as the sole provider for decades of maintenance and service.
Vertical integration puts Shanghai Electric on par with established global gas turbine leaders
The end-to-end model gives Shanghai Electric control over manufacturing, systems integration and multi-decade operational support for a single project, a capability structure the company says matches incumbent global heavy-duty gas turbine suppliers.
Fleet track record shows 103 units delivered and 21,000 MW of installed capacity
Shanghai Electric's current heavy-duty gas turbine lineup consists of two models rated at 300 MW and 78 MW. The company has delivered 103 units to date, with commissioned projects totaling more than 21,000 MW of installed capacity. Units under its long-term service and maintenance programs have logged over 1.3 million cumulative operating hours.
New turbine orders can be delivered starting in 2028 as regional interest grows
With production capacity available across both turbine classes, Shanghai Electric says it can supply new units for delivery as early as 2028. Beyond the Malaysian developer behind the current award, project developers in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam have expressed interest in placing orders.
