Sheridan, Wyoming – June 21, 2024 – Sidel, a global leader in packaging solutions, today announced the successful implementation of a large-scale photovoltaic system at its manufacturing facility in Parma, Italy. This significant investment in renewable energy infrastructure underscores Sidel's ongoing commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.
The newly operational solar array, one of the largest corporate installations in the Emilia-Romagna region, is projected to generate 2,900 MWh of electricity annually, enough to satisfy 40% of the plant's energy needs. This is equivalent to the annual consumption of over 1,000 households in Parma, significantly reducing the plant's reliance on traditional energy sources and contributing to a substantial decrease in CO2 emissions—an estimated 871 tons per year.
“Our commitment to environmental stewardship is deeply ingrained in all our operations,” said Francesca Bellucci, Sustainability Director of the Sidel Group. “Through innovation and the development of sustainable solutions, we actively contribute to CO2 emissions reduction. The full implementation of the photovoltaic system in Parma marks a significant step towards our goal of net-zero emissions across our entire value chain by 2050."
This ambitious project is part of Sidel's broader decarbonization strategy, which aims to achieve a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. The company has already made significant progress, reducing emissions by 75% in 2023 compared to 2019.
Sidel's Parma facility, along with all its production sites worldwide, is certified to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, demonstrating a systematic approach to continuously reducing its global environmental impact. The company aims to not only minimize its carbon footprint but also to drive operational efficiency, innovation, and competitiveness through sustainable practices.
"We are extremely proud to have brought this entire system online, providing the plant with self-generated clean energy," commented Riccardo Rosselli, VP Global Sites & Facility Management at Sidel Group and Site Leader of the Parma site. "This is a pivotal moment for our sustainability efforts in Parma, aligning with both our company's targets and the city's ambitious environmental goals for 2030. I extend my gratitude to all Sidel employees who have dedicated their efforts to make this project a reality."
The photovoltaic system in Parma is one of several investments Sidel has made in its energy transition, totaling approximately 5 million euros in Parma alone. The company remains steadfast in its pursuit of a sustainable future, continuously seeking innovative solutions to minimize its environmental impact and contribute to a greener planet.
