Santa Barbara, Calif. – September 17, 2026 -- Sidero Labs has added native hypervisor capabilities to Talos Linux, allowing enterprises to run containers and virtual machines under one operating system and a single API instead of maintaining separate platforms for each workload type. The company also disclosed it has been acquired by real estate software giant Yardi Systems, which will fund continued development of the open-source project.
Talos Linux now runs VMs without requiring Kubernetes or KubeVirt
The update builds hypervisor functionality directly into Talos Linux, extending the platform's immutability, minimal attack surface and declarative management to virtual machine workloads. Sidero Labs president Steve Francis said the design removes the need for VM infrastructure teams to learn Kubernetes and KubeVirt just to operate virtual machines, while still offering a path toward container-based architectures on their own timeline.
Edge sites can schedule containers directly on Talos Linux, skipping Kubernetes clusters
A second capability lets Talos Linux schedule containers without a Kubernetes cluster, targeting single-node deployments such as retail locations, factory-floor gateways and cell sites where multi-node Kubernetes overhead is unnecessary. These workloads can still be managed through Omni, Sidero's fleet-management plane, alongside clustered Kubernetes environments — giving platform teams one OS, security teams one API to audit, and developers a consistent deployment target regardless of container or VM format.
Enterprises reassess virtualization vendors after hypervisor licensing disruption
The move responds to what Sidero Labs describes as licensing turbulence in the legacy hypervisor market, which has pushed organizations to seek alternatives without duplicating tooling across Kubernetes and VM environments.
Talos Linux Hypervisor alpha debuts at TalosCon Amsterdam in October, GA set for December
The Alpha release and a public demo will be shown at TalosCon 2026 in Amsterdam on October 15-16, with general availability scheduled for December 2026. Talos Linux Hypervisor is fully open source.

Yardi Systems has acquired Sidero Labs, providing the company with enterprise-scale financial backing while preserving its open-source foundation. Yardi founder Anant Yardi said the goal is to give the Talos team and community the resources to unify Kubernetes, containers, virtual machines and GPU workloads on one open platform.
