Irvine, Calif. – September 14, 2026 -- U.S. consumers received just under 3.9 billion robocalls in August 2026, a 10% drop from July and the lowest monthly total since October 2025, according to the YouMail Robocall Index.
August volume falls to 125.4 million calls per day, reversing a year-long upward trend
Daily robocall averages dropped to 125.4 million calls, or 1,451 calls per second, down from July's 139.3 million calls per day and 1,612 calls per second. The decline pulls August volumes back to levels last seen in January and February, breaking the upward trajectory that had persisted through most of 2026.
Trailing 12-month total hits 48.5 billion, the lowest since August 2022
Over the past year, total robocalls reached 48.5 billion, marking the lowest 12-month total recorded since August 2022. YouMail CEO Alex Quilici said the drop is encouraging but cautioned that Americans still field nearly 2 billion telemarketing and scam calls monthly, urging continued use of call-blocking apps.
Unwanted calls fall below 2 billion for only the third time in 24 months
Unwanted robocalls declined nearly 10% to just over 1.9 billion in August. Notifications fell more than 13% and Payment Reminders dropped nearly 4%, contributing to the broadest monthly decline across all robocall categories tracked by the index.
Debt-consolidation loan scams generate over 100 million calls in August
The most prevalent campaign involved pre-approved "hardship loan" offers of up to $23,000, targeting consumers with credit card balances over $10,000 and requiring no credit check. The scripted pitch pressed recipients to press 1 to release funds or press 2 to opt out via a listed callback number.
The campaign originated from tens of thousands of distinct phone numbers, with variations in loan amounts, minimum qualifying debt, and opt-out numbers. Consumer reports indicate recipients never applied for or consented to such offers, pointing to likely fraudulent intent behind the calls, which YouMail estimates generated well over 100 million calls in August alone.
