Los Angeles – September 16, 2026 -- Adventist Health White Memorial and Adventist Health White Memorial Montebello generate more than $1.2 billion in annual economic activity and support approximately 5,500 jobs across Los Angeles County, according to a new study.
Study quantifies hospitals' role as economic anchors serving 2.4 million residents
The analysis, conducted by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), examined the two hospitals' functions as healthcare providers, employers, and community anchors. Combined, they serve more than 2.4 million residents across their primary and secondary service areas.
86% of payor mix comes from Medi-Cal and Medicare amid safety-net pressures
Approximately 86% of Adventist Health White Memorial's payor mix is derived from Medi-Cal and Medicare, exposing the system to reimbursement volatility as government healthcare funding faces scrutiny. In the hospital's Primary Service Area, 14.4% of residents are uninsured, nearly double the Los Angeles County average of 7.6%.
Executives frame the findings as evidence of infrastructure at risk
Daniel Fontoura, President of Adventist Health White Memorial and Adventist Health White Memorial Montebello, said the study quantifies the hospitals' embedded role in the community and called protecting the infrastructure essential for the region's future health and economic strength.
Paul Young, Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Public Policy at the Hospital Association of Southern California, said community hospitals such as Adventist Health White Memorial form an essential part of the healthcare safety net, providing trusted care close to home for underserved populations.
Economic reach extends through purchasing and employee spending
Beyond direct healthcare delivery, the hospitals' economic footprint extends through purchasing, employee spending, and support for local businesses. Maria S. Salinas, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, said the institutions support thousands of jobs and strengthen local businesses and families throughout Los Angeles County.
