Alexandria, Va. – September 15, 2026 -- Woodpack Global has launched Crate Design SystemTM (CDS), a new software tool aimed at replacing decades-old methods still used across the wooden crate and industrial wood packaging industry.
Crate design tools have lagged behind industry needs since the 1960s
Much of the foundational research underpinning wooden crate design dates back more than six decades, forcing engineers and manufacturers to rely on outdated calculation methods not built for modern crate applications. CDS is positioned as the first purpose-built software option for this segment, adapting fastener behavior, wood property, and structural performance models from Woodpack Global's existing Pallet Design SystemTM (PDS).
Initial release targets sheathed, cleated and solid wood crate formats
The first version of CDS supports sheathed and cleated crates as well as solid wood boxes. Woodpack Global has outlined plans for future releases to expand coverage to additional crate styles, new design tools, CAD integration, and other wood packaging formats.
Early adopter reports faster design cycles and cost visibility
Jon Farinha of Girard Wood Products, Inc. said CDS has streamlined his company's design workflow by enabling rapid creation of detailed crate designs alongside 3D and exploded views for customer communication, while also surfacing opportunities to cut costs and improve efficiency.
Software was shaped directly by industry feedback
Kristen DeLack, PE, Principal Engineer & Strategic Business Advisor for PDS at Woodpack Global, said the release reflects input from professionals working with wooden crate structures daily, calling it an initial step rather than a finished product.
