Mainz – September 09, 2026 -- German public broadcaster ZDF has shortlisted five debut novels for its 48th annual "aspekte" Literature Prize, a €10,000 award recognized as a launchpad for major literary careers since 1979.
Five debut novels advance to the final round
The finalists are Valeria Gordeev's "Die Zikade entschlüpft ihrer goldglänzenden Hülle" (S. Fischer), Clara Leinemann's "Gelbe Monster" (Suhrkamp), Martin Piekar's "Vom Fällen eines Stammbaums" (Rowohlt), Lilli Tollkien's "Mit beiden Händen den Himmel stützen" (Aufbau), and David Vajda's "Diamanten" (Hanser). Each title represents a different major German-language publishing house, underscoring the prize's reach across the industry's leading imprints.
Award ceremony set for Frankfurt Book Fair on October 8, 2026
The winner will be announced at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2026, on the joint literature stage operated by ARD, ZDF and 3sat at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The recipient will be profiled the following evening in ZDF's "aspekte" program, streaming from 9:00 p.m. and broadcasting on ZDF from 11:35 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026.
Five-member jury includes critics from Die Welt and Die Zeit
This year's jury comprises Mara Delius (Die Welt), Christian Dunker (Geistesblüten, Berlin), Daniel Fiedler (ZDF), David Hugendick (Die Zeit) and Nicola Steiner (Literaturhaus Zürich).
Prize has historically preceded Nobel and Büchner wins
Since its 1979 launch, the ZDF award for best German-language prose debut has gone to authors including Ozan Zakariya Keskinkılıç, Charlotte Gneuß and Philipp Winkler, as well as Katja Petrowskaja, Ingo Schulze, Zoë Jenny and Hanns-Josef Ortheil. Past winners Felicitas Hoppe and Herta Müller went on to receive the Büchner Prize and the Nobel Prize in Literature, respectively.
