BR's 'Werwölfe' Reality Format Wins German TV Award 2026

Munich – September 15, 2026 -- Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) won the Deutscher Fernsehpreis 2026 in the "Best Entertainment Reality" category for "Werwölfe - Das Spiel von List und Täuschung," a reality gameshow co-produced with SWR and WDR for the ARD Mediathek streaming platform.

Season one drew 5.9 million streams on ARD Mediathek

The format, produced by ITV Studios Germany under BR's lead responsibility, generated 5.9 million retrievals since its debut, according to AGF Zensus and Global Views data. It had already received the German Entertainment Award in June.

Format is licensed from board game "Die Werwölfe von Düsterwald"

The show adapts the tabletop game created by Philippe des Pallières and Hervé Marly, published by Asmodee, with DreamSpark holding the licensing rights. The premise places 13 participants in a village setting, where three secretly designated werewolves attempt to eliminate other players without exposure.

Season two launches September 24 on streaming, October 8 on linear TV

All 12 episodes of season one remain available on ARD Mediathek. The second season debuts on the streaming platform on September 24, 2026, followed by a linear broadcast on BR Fernsehen starting October 8, airing three episodes weekly on Mondays at 23:15. Comedian Michael Kessler returns as the show's narrator.

Iris Mayerhofer, head of BR's Entertainment and Regional Programming division, called the award confirmation of the broadcaster's strategy to pursue unconventional entertainment formats, crediting collaboration between BR, ITV Studios Germany and ARD partners.

BR collected two additional Fernsehpreis awards this cycle

Editor Xenja Kupin won "Best Information Editing" for the BR docuseries "Rise & Fall 1860 München." Director Carsten Seibt received "Best Entertainment Direction" for the New Year's Eve show "Silvester-Schlagerbooom 2026 - Die Wunderlichtershow," a Eurovision co-production between ARD, ORF and SRF led by BR.
