CordenPharma Invests €80M to Reach 500M Sterile Injectable Units

Basel – September 15, 2026 -- CordenPharma is committing €80 million in multi-year capital expenditure to expand aseptic fill-finish capacity at its FDA- and EMA-approved Caponago site near Milan, targeting total production capacity of up to 500 million sterile injectable units annually.

New 11,000-square-meter facility adds over 50% to site footprint

A key milestone within the total investment was the €13 million acquisition of a new 11,000 m2 commercial building and an adjacent 26,000 m2 plot next to the existing advanced-phase fill-finish area. The expansion, completed July 28, 2026, increases the facility's overall footprint by more than 50%.

The new space can accommodate at least four aseptic fill-finish lines, four visual inspection lines and four packaging lines, with options for client-owned lines, large-scale lyophilization and autoinjector assembly. Formats supported include prefilled syringes, vials (liquid or lyophilized), cartridges and autoinjectors, serving peptide, LNP, small molecule, biologics and oligonucleotide injectable therapies.

Two isolator-based lines already boost near-term output

Over the past two years, CordenPharma added two new aseptic fill-finish lines with isolator technology within an existing operational area at Caponago. A combined Bausch & Ströbel line supports clinical and small-scale commercial production of prefilled syringes, vials and cartridges. A high-speed Syntegon line, dedicated to prefilled syringes and cartridges, can produce more than 500,000 units per day.

The company also expanded automated secondary packaging capacity for prefilled syringes, vials and ampoules, and doubled analytical capacity to support its growing project pipeline. Completion of the new isolator lines is scheduled for mid-2027 and 2028 respectively.

Expansion targets rising demand across GLP-1, oncology and oligonucleotide therapies

The added capacity addresses growing global outsourcing demand for sterile injectables across oncology, obesity, diabetes and inflammatory disease treatments requiring complex modalities such as GLP-1 peptide therapies, oligonucleotides, lipid nanoparticles (LNP) and biosimilars. Clients gain access to integrated drug substance-to-drug product solutions at the Caponago site, which combines injectable fill-finish with LNP manufacturing capabilities.

Michael Quirmbach, President and CEO of CordenPharma Group, said the investment, backed by shareholder Astorg, reinforces the company's leadership in complex modality manufacturing and strengthens end-to-end supply capabilities to meet rising global demand for injectable outsourcing.
