DENSO Donates 3 Acres for YMCA Childcare Center in Tennessee

Athens, Tennessee – October 19, 2026 -- DENSO Manufacturing Athens Tennessee, Inc. (DMAT) has donated about three acres to the Athens-McMinn Family YMCA for a new early learning center, backed by a $2.5 million federal grant.

YMCA targets 2027 groundbreaking and 2028 completion

The two organizations have finalized the land transfer. The YMCA expects to break ground in early 2027, with construction due to finish by early 2028. The center will house a preschool and childcare services open to families across the community.

The parcel lies southwest of DENSO's Athens campus, close to Interstate 75 and other large employers.

Needs assessment found a childcare shortage in McMinn County

The project grew out of a community needs assessment by the United Way of McMinn and Meigs Counties, which identified a childcare shortage in the area. Local leaders then began looking for ways to expand access for working families. The McMinn County Economic Development Authority connected DENSO and the YMCA and helped advance the initiative.

Rep. Fleischmann secures $2.5 million in federal funding

U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann secured the $2.5 million federal grant for developing the center. He described the project as an example of public and private partners investing together in the region's workforce and children.

DMAT President Mark Moses said access to quality childcare and early learning "helps communities thrive." Bradi Sewell, CEO and Executive Director of the Athens-McMinn Family YMCA, said the center will expand childcare access for local families.

DMAT employs more than 1,200 as McMinn County's largest employer

DMAT manufactures advanced automotive components and systems and has operated in Athens since 1997.
