Germany Orders Two PATRIOT Fire Units to Replace Ukraine Transfers

Koblenz – November 02, 2026 -- Germany's procurement agency BAAINBw has contracted two new PATRIOT fire units to replace systems the Bundeswehr handed to Ukraine in August 2025, and has also ordered new containerized repair equipment for the air defense system.

Budget Committee approved the purchases on October 14, 2026

The Bundestag's Budget Committee cleared both procurements on October 14, 2026, according to the agency. The Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) then signed the replacement contract. The source gives no contract value or delivery schedule.

Delivery covers full fire units, services and spare parts

A PATRIOT fire unit comprises a radar device, a command post, several launchers and further components, including power supply systems. The scope covers complete fire units plus service packages and spare-parts bundles. The two units replace those transferred to Ukraine for defense against Russia's war of aggression.

Containerized repair kits replace late-1980s equipment

The newly ordered maintenance containers succeed repair equipment dating from the late 1980s. They are fully containerized and can be carried and operated on trucks already in Bundeswehr service, which raises mobility and allows flexible deployment. The aim is to keep the system repairable during deployments worldwide.

BAAINBw project manager Rainer F. described the containers as a core element in renewing the maintenance equipment of the surface-to-air missile units. He said they will secure the weapon system's repair capability globally.

PATRIOT has been in German service since 1989

The Bundeswehr introduced PATRIOT in 1989 and has modernized it continuously since. The system gained prominence in Operation DESERT STORM in 1991 through its role in countering Iraqi ballistic missiles. In recent years the Bundeswehr has deployed it on NATO's eastern flank, including Poland and Slovakia, and in Turkey.
