Midea Reports 10 Million R290 AC Units Sold, Cuts 5.2M Tonnes CO2

Berlin – September 15, 2026 -- Midea has sold more than 10 million air conditioners using R290 natural refrigerant since 2018, cutting an estimated 5.2 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions, the company said at IFA 2026, an impact it compares to the carbon absorption of 6.2 million hectares of Amazon rainforest.

Midea marks 16 years as top global manufacturer of R290 air conditioners

The company has led global production of air conditioners using R290 refrigerant for 16 consecutive years, driving compressor safety and performance advances tied to the gas. R290 carries an extremely low global warming potential, near-zero CO2 emissions, no PFAS content, and delivers roughly 10% higher energy efficiency than conventional refrigerants, according to Midea. H-Pack indoor heat pump eliminates outdoor unit for European installers

Developed by Midea's European R&D team, H-Pack is a compact indoor-only heat pump that removes the need for an outdoor unit, addressing noise, space and architectural constraints for homeowners. Remote diagnostics allow technicians to identify and resolve issues without a site visit, cutting service costs. The system supports both hybrid and fully electric heating modes.

PortaSplit set to adopt R290 refrigerant in 2027

Midea also showcased PortaSplit, a residential split-system unit built for simple installation and quiet operation, displayed in a mock European home setting. The product is scheduled to switch to R290 refrigerant in 2027.

VitaBreeze wins IFA 2026 Technical Innovation Award for airflow control

Midea's newly launched VitaBreeze received the IFA 2026 Technology Innovation Award, accepted by Ralph Kobsik, Managing Director of Midea Europe GmbH. The unit uses "AirGrid" technology to map room layouts and let users control airflow direction via smartphone, with presence detection that directs or avoids airflow based on occupant preference. Its Breezeless Pro function expands airflow coverage by 30% while maintaining draft-free cooling. Additional features include "ClimaBalance" humidity control and the ECOMASTER 2.0 system for predictive energy optimization.

Raynor Pro heat pump holds full capacity at -25°C, wins iF Design Award

Targeting Nordic climates, Raynor Pro operates down to -40°C and retains 100% of its heating capacity at -25°C, with an A+++ energy efficiency rating for both heating and cooling. The unit, styled by Midea's design team in Milan, also won an iF Design Award.

MHELIOS energy system complies with Germany's EnWG Section 14a

Midea's MHELIOS home energy management platform integrates EV chargers, heat pumps, solar panels and battery storage, optimizing energy storage and consumption against dynamic electricity tariffs to lower costs and support grid stability. The system complies with Germany's EnWG Section 14a regulation, aiming to maximize clean energy use without reducing household comfort.
