Rio Tinto selects family-owned buyer with 228 years of trading history
Rio Tinto Diamonds General Manager Sales and Marketing Patrick Coppens described Boodles as a family-owned company with 228 years' experience. He said Rio Tinto's priority was to place the brand with an owner that understands its history and can "responsibly steward" it into the future.
Boodles Managing Director Jody Wainwright said the company is committed to the gemstones, which he said have shaped jewellery designs for more than 40 years.
Argyle supplied more than 90 per cent of the world's pink diamonds before closure
The Argyle mine was the world's first and only source of pink diamonds, producing more than 90 per cent of world supply. Production ended on 3 November 2020, so the inventory now held by Boodles is the last remaining stock.
Rio Tinto said it remains committed to closing and rehabilitating the site in a way that recognises the Traditional Owners' deep connection to Country.
