SHERIDAN, WYOMING — July 03, 2026 — Stellantis Pro One, the commercial vehicles business unit of Stellantis, has introduced a new version of its Compact Van family built specifically around the needs of solo professional drivers. The Smart Compact Van adds a redesigned cabin, a modular passenger seat called Flexiseat, and a new battery-electric powertrain option to a range that already leads the European market. Order intake opens in September, with market launch following in November. The move targets fleet renewal programs, small and medium-sized businesses, and new commercial operators looking for a lower entry price point.
Cabin Redesign Responds to How Drivers Actually Work
Stellantis based the update on real-world usage data rather than a general styling refresh. Company analysis found that professional drivers travel alone roughly 90% of the time, and that 40% of customers have no interest in a three-seat configuration. That finding shaped the entire interior. The door panels and dashboard were fully reworked to prioritize space and control ergonomics, while the exterior gained a larger, more robust front bumper for added protection.
Flexiseat Turns an Empty Seat Into Usable Space
The centerpiece of the redesign is Flexiseat, a modular passenger seat that folds to free up 0.5 cubic meters of load volume. An optional add-on called Modutable converts the folded seat into a mobile workstation or a table for breaks. Buyers can add Modutable at any point in the vehicle's lifecycle, not only at the time of purchase. Stellantis Pro One describes it as a global first, available exclusively on this version.
Additional storage features round out the cabin update. Moduconsole is a removable central console with a cupholder and closed storage that can be reconfigured for tools, a tablet, or documents. Dashbox adds two closed compartments plus a cupholder to the dashboard. Drivedrawer is an under-seat drawer sized for a laptop or notebooks. A 220V outlet is also standard, letting drivers charge devices during the day. For fleets that still need three-seat capacity, a Moduwork configuration keeps a central seat available while retaining the option to fold it for load-through of long items.
Four Brands, One Underlying Vehicle
The Smart Compact Van reaches the market under four separate nameplates: Citroën Berlingo Van FIRST, Fiat Professional Doblò EasyPRO, Opel Combo START, and PEUGEOT Partner ACTIVE. Exterior and interior dimensions are unchanged from the base range. Two body lengths remain available, with payload capacity from 750 kg to 1 ton and load volume between 3.3 and 4.4 cubic meters.
Eric Laforge, STELLANTIS Pro One Global Senior Vice President, framed the launch as a response to competitive pressure and customer expectations.
"Being a leader implies a great responsibility — Excellence is expected by the customers, including those yet to be won. This is why, listening closely to their feedback, we have developed a rational, comfortable and modular vehicle, delivering original solutions that are a real Unique Selling Proposition."
Powertrain Choices Cover Combustion, Hybrid and Electric
Stellantis kept the powertrain lineup broad rather than pushing customers toward a single technology. The new battery-electric option delivers up to 270 km of range, among the strongest figures in the Stellantis Pro One lineup. Buyers who prefer combustion can choose from three engines — two diesel and one petrol — each paired with a manual transmission. A mild-hybrid variant will follow next year, giving fleet buyers a mid-point option between combustion and full electrification.
Pricing Undercuts the Rest of the Range
The Smart Compact Van launches at a base price below the rest of the Compact Van lineup, across both combustion and electric versions. Stellantis attributes the lower price to economies of scale and cost discipline rather than reduced specification. Luca Marengo, Head of Product and Innovation at Stellantis Pro One, said the version matches the base model's core specifications while adding the standard Flexiseat.
"This new Smart Compact Van makes no compromises on capability. It offers the same core specifications as the base version, enhanced by the addition of the standard Flexiseat, which define a new paradigm in the cabin functionality delivering more space, more functionality and greater value to the customer. Furthermore, upgrade options can be added at any stage of the vehicle lifecycle, further demonstrating the flexibility that has always characterized Stellantis vehicles, designed around customer needs."
A Segment Stellantis Cannot Afford to Cede
Stellantis currently holds a 48.2% share of the European Compact Van market on a year-to-date basis through April 2026, close to one in every two vehicles sold. That position brings pressure as much as advantage. New and increasingly aggressive competitors are pushing into the same segment, and the Smart Compact Van's combination of lower pricing and driver-focused features is aimed squarely at defending share among fleet operators, SMEs, and new business buyers weighing their first commercial vehicle purchase.
