Saxony-Anhalt Faces €160.3M Bill to Secure Teutschenthal Mine

Halle – November 07, 2026 -- Saxony-Anhalt needs about €160.3 million through 2037 to secure, make safe and decommission the former Teutschenthal salt mine, which now serves as an underground waste repository, according to a letter from the state's economy and finance ministries to the parliamentary finance committee, as reported by the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung.

Insolvency and failed investor search force the state to step in

The cost increase follows the insolvency of the operator, GTS Grube Teutschenthal Sicherungs GmbH. An investor search failed, so the state must take over responsibility for the mine through a substitute performance order (Ersatzvornahme). The state-owned Mitteldeutsche Sanierungs- und Entsorgungsgesellschaft (MDSE) is expected to become the new operator.

DISA Uranium Starts First NRC-Licensed Mine Waste Cleanup in Colorado

Casper – November 04, 2026 -- DISA Uranium Corporation has started its first abandoned uranium mine (AUM) cleanup under its U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) license at the Mary Ann site in Montrose County, Colorado, while holding agreements that cover more than 375 legacy AUM sites, primarily in Colorado and Utah.

Mary Ann is the first project under a license issued in September 2025

The NRC Service Provider License authorizes DISA Uranium to deploy its mobile, patented HPSA technology directly at AUM sites. The company describes it as the first and only license of its kind.

Mary Ann sits on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land outside Nucla. DISA Uranium says the project establishes a regulatory pathway for recovering uranium from legacy mine waste on federal land, developed with the NRC, the BLM and the State of Colorado.
