NYU Langone Names Sean Berry Vice Chair of Radiation Oncology Physics

New York – September 15, 2026 -- NYU Langone Health's Perlmutter Cancer Center has named Sean L. Berry, PhD, vice chair of physics and dosimetry in its Department of Radiation Oncology, recruiting a 20-year veteran of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to lead treatment-planning quality and safety programs.

Berry moves from a regional physicist role overseeing multi-site radiation oncology operations

Before joining NYU Langone, Berry served as regional lead physicist and associate attending physicist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, managing clinical physics operations across outpatient sites in Westchester County, New York, and Bergen County, New Jersey. His duties included supervising faculty physicists, staff physicists and dosimetrists, regulatory readiness, accreditation activities, budget oversight, linear accelerator commissioning and standardizing radiation oncology practice across multiple locations.

New hire brings expertise across IMRT, VMAT, SRS and SBRT treatment planning

Berry has developed automation and auditing tools aimed at improving treatment-plan quality, workflow efficiency and patient safety. His clinical and research work spans knowledge-based planning, autosegmentation, deformable image registration, surface-guided radiation therapy, next-generation cone beam CT and CT simulation protocol standardization. Earlier in his career, he led acceptance testing and commissioning for the initial deployment of the Eclipse treatment planning system at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Perlmutter Cancer Center leadership cites investment in advanced radiation technologies

Anirban Maitra, MD, director of Perlmutter Cancer Center, said Berry's experience spans clinical care, quality, safety, operations and education. Daniel R. Gomez, MD, chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, said Berry has a track record of building systems that improve consistency and safety in radiotherapy delivery. Berry has taught within the CAMPEP medical physics curriculum as adjunct professor of applied physics and applied mathematics at Columbia University since 2021, and has received teaching honors including the Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology Educator of the Year Award.

Berry is board certified in therapeutic medical physics by the American Board of Radiology and holds a New York medical physicist license. He earned his PhD and MS in medical physics from Columbia University and a BS in physics, summa cum laude, from Canisius College.
