ANSI, America Makes Launch AM Standards Database, Gaps Report

New York – October 01, 2026 -- The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and America Makes have launched a searchable online database of additive manufacturing (AM) standards alongside a September 2026 Gaps Progress Report, giving manufacturers and regulators a clearer map of which safety and performance standards exist, which are in development, and where coverage is still missing.

Both tools originate from the Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC), a cross-sector body jointly led by ANSI and America Makes, as AM adoption expands into aerospace, medical devices, automotive, and defense applications where parts from different machines and manufacturers must perform consistently.

New database lets users filter AM standards by material, process, and lifecycle stage

The Additive Manufacturing Standards Database, hosted on the ANSI website, allows users to search by keyword or sort results by material, process, standard type, and other criteria across the AM lifecycle, industry sectors, and standards developing organizations. Access is free after completing a brief online form, and the database will be updated regularly, drawing on AMSC roadmap input, public comment calls, and research into standards developers' work programs.

September progress report tracks 5 of 141 identified standardization gaps

The September 2026 Gaps Progress Report updates five of the 141 standardization gaps identified in the AMSC's Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing, Version 3.0 — a foundational document built with input from roughly 300 experts spanning federal agencies, national laboratories, standards developing organizations, industry, and academia. The update identified no new gaps. The report functions as a living document, to be republished periodically until the AMSC issues its next roadmap version, with the next progress report expected in April 2027.
