Washington – September 21, 2026 -- Arc XP, the media technology platform built inside The Washington Post, launched Arc XP Compass, a personalization engine that rebuilds news home pages and section fronts around each returning reader while leaving editorial priorities in newsroom hands.
Publishers' own sites just lost their lead as the top news source
Social media and video networks now edge out publishers' own websites and apps as the most common way people get news, used by 54% of respondents across 48 markets versus 51% for news organizations' own sites and apps, according to the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism's Digital News Report 2026.
The gap widens sharply among younger audiences: 52% of 18-to-24-year-olds now name social media, video networks or AI chatbots as their main news source, 32 points ahead of the next-ranked source. Publishers' own sites and apps are no longer the primary news source for any age group globally.
AI chatbots are gaining ground while referral traffic weakens
Ten percent of respondents worldwide used a standalone AI chatbot for news in the past week, up from 7% a year earlier, rising to 16% among under-35s. Referral traffic is also eroding: Google Discover traffic to Reach, the UK's largest commercial news publisher, fell 46% in the second half of 2025, per the company's investor disclosure.
Compass tracks what a reader already saw and fills in the gap
The product's "Catch Me Up" feature identifies returning readers, recalls what they last read, and opens with a recap of developments they missed, built from the newsroom's own reporting rather than a generated summary. First-time visitors do not see this treatment. A related feature, Dynamic Timelines, consolidates every update to an ongoing story into a single storyline instead of scattering coverage across separate links.
Editors retain final say through built-in override controls
Editorial Priority Controls let editors pin, boost, or bury any story directly within the personalized layout, a mechanism Arc XP says keeps automated recommendations aligned with newsroom judgment. Arc XP is positioning the approach against both algorithmic feeds and AI chatbots, noting that global trust in AI chatbot answers sits at 20%, compared with 37% trust in news overall.
"Publishers don't want to hand their relationship with readers over to somebody else's algorithm. They want a better version of their own front page,
