London – October 14, 2026 -- Price reporting agency Argus has launched the first ticket price assessments for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) used in Germany's road transport sector, giving the emerging renewable hydrogen market a new benchmark.
Assessments cover RFNBO hydrogen, e-methanol and e-methane
The assessments reflect the value of RFNBO hydrogen and of products made from it, including e-methanol and e-methane. These fuels can be used to meet Germany's greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction rules.
Germany has introduced a dedicated RFNBO quota for road transport. The quota creates a mandated market for renewable hydrogen and related products and raises demand for transparent, independent price references.
Road fuel and hydrogen suppliers can use prices in contract negotiations
Road fuel suppliers that must meet the quota, along with hydrogen suppliers, need independent RFNBO ticket price assessments. They can use the prices as reference points in negotiations and potentially embed them in supply contracts.
The assessments build on Argus' established coverage of Germany's GHG quota market and link RFNBO values to the compliance market where the fuels are used. They also complement Argus' existing suite of calculated hydrogen production costs for a range of locations and production pathways.
Germany's expected import role extends the benchmark's reach beyond its borders
Germany is expected to become a major importer of renewable hydrogen. Price signals from its regulated transport market can therefore inform investment decisions and new supply projects internationally, according to Argus.
Argus Media chairman and chief executive Adrian Binks said the assessments bring transparency to a market drawing significant interest from hydrogen producers, suppliers and investors worldwide, and give participants an independent reference for understanding and negotiating the value created by Germany's quota.
Argus publishes the prices in three products
The RFNBO assessments appear in Argus O.M.R. Fuels, Argus Biofuels and Argus Hydrogen and Future Fuels. This makes them available to customers in the fuels, biofuels and hydrogen markets.
