Bend, Ore. – September 18, 2026 -- Amazon Web Services has published MSP Validation Checklist (VCL) 8.0, a revised standard requiring managed service providers to prove AI-driven delivery capabilities to earn and maintain AWS MSP validation, cloud operations firm Platformr said.
AWS overhauls 61 controls to embed AI across every requirement
Of the standard's 61 total controls, 24 are entirely new, covering agentic AI platform and agent lifecycle governance, a Responsible AI framework for data governance and prompt injection prevention, agentic Zero Trust and blast-radius containment, and GenAI observability tracking sessions, traces, drift and cost. The update also mandates operational toil measurement, an AI transformation roadmap with industry vertical specialization, and new Forward Deployed Engineer and AI Practice Lead roles.
27 existing controls now incorporate AI; 15 retired controls consolidated
Another 27 existing controls were revised to add AI capabilities: change management now covers AI model changes, vulnerability management extends to agent dependencies, and FinOps includes AI workload cost optimization. Ten foundational controls -- including IAM, encryption, Well-Architected and patch management -- remain unchanged, while 15 VCL 7.1 controls were retired and folded into broader requirements, such as merging role-based access, MFA and IAM into a single control.
Managed services market seen hitting $645 billion in 2026
The managed services market is projected to reach $645 billion in 2026, expanding at a 10% compound annual growth rate, with agentic AI expected to generate up to $200 billion in net-new value over the next five years, according to industry estimates cited by Platformr. The company noted that only a small share of MSPs have so far extended agentic AI into customer-facing operations, a gap AWS's updated standard is designed to close by shifting several previously recommended AI controls to mandatory status.
Platformr positions its CloudOps platform to close the compliance gap
Platformr CEO Ryan Comingdeer said AWS has raised the bar for what constitutes a modern managed services practice, making predictive monitoring, AIOps and AI-first delivery mandatory under the new checklist. Platformr said its platform automates AWS Landing Zone deployment, multi-account governance and observability -- capabilities that align with the operational and AI-readiness areas VCL 8.0 now requires -- and that it is working with MSP partners to assess current coverage against the checklist to help them secure AWS MSP designation.
