Ballard Secures Largest Mireo Plus H Order for Romanian Hydrogen Trains

Vancouver, BC – October 06, 2026 -- Ballard Power Systems has won an order for 24 FCrail 200 kW fuel cell modules from Siemens Mobility GmbH, totaling 4.8 MW of capacity, to power Romania's first hydrogen-powered passenger train fleet.

Order marks largest-ever commercial deployment of Siemens' Mireo Plus H platform

The 24 fuel cell modules will be installed across 12 Mireo Plus H trains commissioned by Romania's Railway Reform Authority (ARF). The deployment is the largest to date for the Mireo Plus H platform, the first outside Germany, and the first hydrogen rail fleet in Eastern Europe.

Fuel cell deliveries scheduled for 2027 and 2028 ahead of 2029 passenger service launch

Ballard will ship the fuel cell engines in 2027 and 2028, with the Romanian fleet expected to enter commercial passenger service in 2029. The order extends a multi-year supply agreement between Ballard and Siemens Mobility established in 2022, building on prior Mireo Plus H deployments already operating in Germany.

Hydrogen trains positioned as direct diesel replacement on non-electrified routes

Siemens Mobility's Mireo Plus H trains, powered by Ballard fuel cells, are designed as a 1:1 replacement for diesel engines on non-electrified rail lines, offering long range, fast refueling and operation across varied environmental conditions. Thomas Graetz, Head of Regional and Commuter Rail at Siemens Mobility, said the order introduces hydrogen-powered rail transport to Eastern Europe for the first time, leveraging the Mireo platform's track record in Germany.

Ballard CEO Marty Neese said the order represents the largest deployment of the Mireo Plus H fleet to date and reflects the companies' ongoing partnership in zero-emission rail technology across Europe.
