Global – October 17, 2026 -- Brandon Hall Group began tracking Workforce Intelligence as a distinct HCM technology category in 2025, arguing that vendors using the term are often describing different capabilities.
Brandon Hall Group defines Workforce Intelligence as continuous, connected understanding of workforce and work
The analyst firm defines the category as the continuous understanding of the workforce, the work being performed, available skills and the external talent market, using connected data to improve workforce and business decisions. Workforce movement is central to that definition: hires, exits, internal moves, and shifts in turnover, attendance, scheduling, compensation and employee sentiment.
Advances in AI, data integration and workforce modeling are driving the convergence, according to the firm. Vendors are entering from People Analytics, Skills Intelligence, Talent Intelligence, Strategic Workforce Planning, Labor Market Intelligence and emerging Work Intelligence, and their capabilities increasingly overlap.
Five domains set the benchmark for buyers comparing vendors
Brandon Hall Group identifies five connected domains: People, Skills and Capabilities, Work, External Market, and Business Context. A platform need not cover all five, the firm says, but buyers should know which domains a product addresses, how it links to the others and which decisions those links improve.
Talent intelligence is one foundation of the category but narrower in scope. Knowing who has a skill is talent intelligence; knowing whether the business needs more of it, whether AI is changing the work and whether skilled employees are leaving moves toward Workforce Intelligence.
FPT Software found 40% of its skills data was outdated, incomplete or contradictory
Brandon Hall Group's 2026 HCM Excellence Awards research cited FPT Software, which reported that about 40% of its skills information was unreliable. Managers sometimes considered external hiring while qualified engineers were already on staff. After improving its skills intelligence and matching, the company began finding internal talent beyond managers' existing networks.
The firm applies the same logic to a request to hire 200 people with specific technical skills. Instead of starting with headcount approval, an organization would first check for existing employees, adjacent skills, automatable work, external availability and cost.
Four organizations won the first Workforce Intelligence awards category
In 2025, Brandon Hall Group added Best Workforce Intelligence & People Analytics to its Technology Awards. Capgemini won Gold for its Orgvue-enabled TransformX Operating Model. ActivTrak took Silver, while Tata Consultancy Services and UST shared Bronze.
The entries covered data quality, analytics, organizational transformation and business impact, which the firm cites as evidence that vendors using identical terminology may be solving different problems. It recommends buyers assess the category through six questions, starting with which workforce decisions the technology actually improves.
