United Kingdom – October 16, 2026 -- National Grid is advancing a portfolio of transmission projects that includes a seven-year, £1 billion programme to rewire South London through deep underground tunnels, begun in Spring 2020, and several 2 GW high voltage direct current (HVDC) links between Scotland and England.

Eastern Green Links add 2 GW corridors from Scotland to England

EGL1 is a 2 GW HVDC link between the Torness area in East Lothian, Scotland, and Hawthorn Pit in County Durham. EGL2, also rated at 2 GW, will run from Peterhead in Aberdeenshire to Drax in North Yorkshire. EGL3 and EGL4 are intended to raise network capability to connect new offshore wind farms.

National Grid Electricity Transmission is also developing Sea Link, a planned high voltage undersea connection between Suffolk and Kent. Separately, a project to strengthen the Scotland-England network would connect new energy sources in the Scottish Borders.

United Kingdom – October 13, 2026 -- National Grid is running a transmission build-out that includes a seven-year, £1 billion project to rewire South London through deep underground tunnels, alongside new high-voltage links to carry offshore wind and solar power south from Scotland and the North.

Two 2GW HVDC links target Scottish and North Sea generation

EGL1 is a two-gigawatt (GW) high voltage direct current (HVDC) link between the Torness area in East Lothian, Scotland, and Hawthorn Pit in County Durham. EGL2, also rated at 2GW, will run between Peterhead in Aberdeenshire and Drax in North Yorkshire. Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) and Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) are intended to increase network capability to connect new offshore wind farms.

National Grid Shifts to Bay Sharing for Connections up to 450 MW

United Kingdom – October 12, 2026 -- National Grid Electricity Transmission is moving new transmission connection applicants toward shared "bay sharing" arrangements that let multiple customers with requirements of up to 450 MW connect through common facilities. The shift is part of Phase 2 of Connections Reform and aims to use existing assets more efficiently and reduce the need for dedicated infrastructure.

Three shared connection products are now on offer

Grid Parks connect up to three customers through a shared transformer and lower-voltage infrastructure. They suit smaller customers with requirements up to approximately 57 MW and are already used across the transmission network.

Super Grid Parks use higher-voltage infrastructure for larger customers or more customers, with projects of around 150 MW as the target. They are aimed at new substations where future customer growth can be planned.
