EcoFlow, Elia, Equinix Debate EU Grid Strain Ahead of IFA 2026

Berlin – September 07, 2026 -- Data centers powering AI workloads and the rapid growth of electric vehicle fleets are pushing Europe's electricity grids toward their limits, forcing corporate boards to treat energy resilience as a strategic priority rather than a utility-side problem. Ahead of IFA Berlin 2026 (September 4-8), The Economist Enterprise and EcoFlow released a recorded panel discussion, "Flexible by Design: Energy Resilience for Business," addressing grid bottlenecks and volatile energy costs facing European enterprises.

Grid connection queues and price swings now shape corporate investment decisions

Panelists cited record energy price volatility, multi-year grid connection backlogs, and periods of negative wholesale pricing as factors reshaping business strategy across Europe. The discussion brought together regulators, grid operators, digital infrastructure executives and industry representatives to examine how flexible energy management and demand-response mechanisms could relieve pressure on strained networks.

EcoFlow moves consumer-tested storage technology into the commercial segment

EcoFlow is extending an architecture already deployed across millions of homes and devices worldwide into offerings for small and midsize businesses, combining modular hardware, automated dynamic-tariff optimization and AI-based software. "Small and medium businesses face the same price volatility and high costs as households," said Nick Chen, Chief Strategy Officer at EcoFlow. He said the company's global consumer base showed that mass adoption of clean energy requires simplicity, modular scalability and software-driven automation, and that transferring this technology base to commercial customers is intended to cut operating costs and secure power continuity.

Panel featured regulators, grid and data-center executives

Participants included Bram Claeys, Secretary General of the Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER); James Matthys-Donnadieu, Chief Customers, Markets & Systems Officer at Elia Group; and Eulalia Flo, Vice President of Development and Emerging Markets Europe at Equinix. Phillip Cornell, senior energy and sustainability advisor at Economist Enterprise, moderated the session.

Discussion topics span 2030 market outlook and distributed energy resources

Topics covered included flexible connection agreements and demand-management mechanisms to ease grid queues, the role of distributed battery storage and solar generation in balancing supply and demand alongside transmission systems, and how current regulatory shifts could shape European electricity markets and competitiveness over the next decade. The full panel recording is available on demand through The Economist's events portal. EcoFlow will present its energy ecosystems for homes and businesses at IFA Berlin 2026 in Hall 3.2 of Messe Berlin.
