Virginia Beach – – September 26, 2026 -- Farm Aid 2026 drew a national spotlight to America's family farmers on Saturday, staged at Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater as Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies rose 46% in 2025 and roughly 15,000 farms closed nationwide.
Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies climbed 46% in 2025, marking the third consecutive year of increases
The filing surge represents a sustained deterioration in farm finances rather than a single-year anomaly, with the closures translating into direct losses of local jobs, tax revenue and food-supply capacity across affected counties.
Virginia Beach farmland faces mounting competition from the state's expanding data center industry
More than 23,000 acres of farmland remain active in Virginia Beach alongside residential neighborhoods, commercial development and one of the nation's largest military communities, illustrating the land-use pressure family operations face as Virginia's data center sector grows.
Willie Nelson frames farm viability as a community survival issue
"When farmers can't make it, we lose access to food, businesses lose customers and communities lose people and land that can't be replaced," said Farm Aid President and Founder Willie Nelson, adding that farmers deserve "a fair chance to make a living, take care of their families and improve the land they love."
Festival lineup and national broadcast coverage amplified the message
Board artists Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Margo Price and Nathaniel Rateliff performed alongside Turnpike Troubadours, Lukas Nelson, Sierra Ferrell, I'm With Her and other acts. CNN aired a four-hour special with live performances and on-the-ground reporting, while SiriusXM provided exclusive audio coverage; additional livestreams ran on FarmAid.org, Farm Aid's YouTube channel and nugs.
Pre-festival programming included a Distressed Borrowers Assistance Network training and farm tours
Events ahead of the main festival featured the annual Farmer Forum, two local farm tours and the Farm Aid Family Reunion "We the Farmers" Takeover, alongside HOMEGROWN Village activities on climate, soil, water and energy and HOMEGROWN Concessions showcasing Virginia and Chesapeake region food, including Well Sown Estate Lager brewed by Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery.
Fundraising has topped $90 million since 1985, with a live memorabilia auction extending the campaign
The Farm Aid 2026 Memorabilia Auction remains open for bidding at farmaid.org/auction through Friday, October 9 at 5 p.m. ET, with proceeds supporting the organization's farmer assistance programs.
