HiTHIUM Enters Canada With 8-Hour BESS, Cold-Ready Sodium-Ion

Toronto – October 21, 2026 -- HiTHIUM, which says it has surpassed 200 GWh in cumulative delivered energy storage capacity, has entered the Canadian market with 4-hour and 8-hour lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) and a new 4 MWh sodium-ion product designed for extreme cold.

HiTHIUM builds Canadian footprint across six locations

Toronto serves as the main hub for Canadian operations. The company also runs subsidiary offices in British Columbia and Alberta, and operating sites in Quebec, Yellowknife and Fort Smith, said Mizhi Zhang, President of Global Business.

HiTHIUM is targeting a market where installed Canadian storage is expected to double between 2025 and 2027. Total wind, solar and storage capacity is on track to reach 50 GW by 2035, according to the company.

Native 8-hour system offers 6.9 MWh and 25-year lifespan

HiTHIUM says it developed the first native 8-hour lithium-ion BESS. The 6.9 MWh system uses the company's own 1300 Ah cells and fewer components overall, with a 25-year lifespan. It targets curtailment issues and zero-downtime segments such as AI data centers. For wind developers and data center operators, the company says the system reduces risk and improves revenue reliability.

The 4-hour offering is the "∞Power" 6.25 MWh container, built on HiTHIUM's 1175 Ah cell. Most Canadian projects are currently designed around the 4-hour unit, the company said. Containers can be placed back-to-back and side-to-side, which reduces a project's overall footprint.

4 MWh sodium-ion unit supports 2-to-8-hour durations in northern climates

The new sodium-ion solution is designed for an extra-long service life and supports storage durations of 2 to 8 hours. HiTHIUM is positioning it for extremely cold regions such as Northern Canada. Zhang said the company's parallel lithium-ion and sodium-ion strategy gives customers flexibility because the technologies are highly complementary.

Jordan Hebbert, Senior Manager of Canada, said customers rely on the company's readiness for local certification and long-term bankability from permitting through commissioning. He added that long-term operational data from North American and European projects has recently shown systems outperforming the company's guarantees.

UL Solutions fire test: no thermal propagation at 15 cm spacing

At the start of 2026, HiTHIUM worked with UL Solutions on an independently conducted fire test of its 6.25 MWh block. A container was subjected to 24 hours of extreme combustion with its doors open for maximum thermal spread. Neighboring containers sat 15 cm away, and only passive safety systems were enabled.

The tested container remained structurally intact. No thermal propagation occurred across containers, and cell temperatures in adjacent containers stayed below safety thresholds.
