Salt Lake City – – September 17, 2026 -- Instructure, maker of Canvas LMS, has appointed Stephan Geering as chief privacy officer to lead its global data privacy programs and AI regulatory compliance efforts. Geering brings more than 20 years of experience in data privacy, risk management and public policy across technology, financial services and government sectors.
Geering will vet AI features for privacy and safety risks before customer release
In his new role, Geering will work across Instructure's legal, security and product teams to set requirements for how new products handle learner and educator data. He will oversee the evaluation of AI features for data privacy and safety risks prior to deployment and lead the company's response to emerging AI regulation worldwide.
Executive brings ISO certification experience from major education technology firm
Geering most recently led data privacy, AI governance and compliance programs at a major education technology firm, where he helped secure key ISO certifications. Earlier in his career, he managed international data privacy compliance for global financial institutions and developed regulatory frameworks while working at a government data protection authority.
Geering holds dual privacy certifications and serves on IAPP board
Geering holds Master of Law degrees from the University of Basel and University College London. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional in both Europe and the United States, a board member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), and London co-chair of the Future of Privacy Forum's Privacy Executives Network.
Instructure CEO cites accelerating AI pace as driver for governance role
