Los Angeles – September 20, 2026 -- Kobold Press, the twenty-year-old independent tabletop game publisher behind Tales of the Valiant, will be profiled in an upcoming segment of "All Access hosted by Andy Garcia," a short-form documentary series distributed to Public Television stations nationwide.
Filming is set for September 19, 2026, at the production company's Florida studio
Kobold Press Chief Executive Officer Alexander Stangroom and Marketing Director Dot Steverson will travel to the studio to represent the company. The segment will examine how tabletop roleplaying games function as tools for reading comprehension, arithmetic, negotiation and improvisation, and why libraries, schools and community organizations have added them to programming.
Company traces its roots to a LiveJournal tip jar predating crowdfunding platforms
Kobold Press has since published material for more than ten different game systems, ranging from the fantasy staples Tome of Beasts and the Midgard Campaign Setting to the animal-adventure title RiverBank and the card game Necromancer. The publisher maintains free entry points, including a library game night program and a starter kit, allowing newcomers to try a session at no cost.
Founder Wolfgang Baur frames the feature as a chance to document two decades of growth
"For more than 20 years, the kobolds have been driven by a love of games, storytelling, and the worldwide community that has grown around it," Baur said, calling the documentary an opportunity to show the people behind a small publisher.
Kobold Press committed to human-only authorship across its catalog in 2025
The pledge, issued amid industry-wide debate over generative systems trained on illustrators' and designers' work, drew hundreds of signatories from other publishers. The company has declined to disparage competitors, arguing that a larger, healthier field of publishers brings more players to the hobby overall.
Durability of print products anchors the company's response to tighter entertainment budgets
Kobold Press staff report still using books printed in the 1980s, now passed to their own children, as a case for the format's value against a single hardcover occupying groups for hundreds of hours. The publisher runs hundreds of organized play tables at GenCon, sponsors the tabletop gaming track at DragonCon, and hosts Kobold Con, an annual online anniversary event with community games and charitable donation matching.
